Drain Water Heat Recovery
Drain Water Heat Recovery (DWHR) is a simple concept. Consider the heat energy that's going down the drain when you shower. Using a Power-Pipe®, the heat from this outgoing warm drain water can be harnessed and used to preheat incoming cold fresh water, reducing your hot water heating costs.
Nearly 1/4 of the energy consumed in a typical home is used to heat water for everyday household tasks. Nearly 90% of that energy runs down the drain, mostly in your shower. Now you can recover and re-use much of that energy before it is lost, with a Power-Pipe® Drain Water Heat Recovery (DWHR) System. With the Power-Pipe® installed on your home shower, you can:
- Reduce your overall household water heating costs by up to 35%
- Increase your hot water capacity
- Protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
The Power-Pipe® DWHR System is simple, effective, and maintenance-free, because it is based on a fundamental physical principle called the "falling film" effect. Water falling down a vertical pipe does not run down the center of that pipe as it would seem, but instead clings to its inside wall (think what happens when pouring from a teapot). This creates a thin "falling film" from which the Power-Pipe® can readily recover heat energy.
Power-Pipe® Details:
- Consists of multiple coils of copper tube wrapped together around a copper central drain pipe
- Hot water going down the drain transfers its heat to incoming cold water moving up the coils
- The exclusive, patent-pending design provides greater and more efficient heat exchange than other DWHR devices, with no discernible water pressure loss
